Danae & Dionysios are choreographers and dancers from Greece, as well as artistic directors of “Small Axe” dance company. Their choreographic journey counts collaborations with theatres and organisations such as Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, Staatstheater Braunschweig, Skånes Dancetheater, Theater Rotterdam, Onassis Foundation, the Athens and Epidaurus Festival and more. Individually, they have danced for companies and choreographers such as ZfinMalta National Dance Company, Akram Khan Company, the Hellenic Dance Company, Unterwegstheater, Cocoon Dance Company and others. More specifically, in 2015 they created together their first production “UNCIA”, which has been touring internationally, counting more than 55 performances in 11 countries and has received 7 awards around Europe. Later, they created the full evening show “ATMA”, which has been touring in Europe, Asia and Latin America and “Free At Last”, which was created under the production house of Theater Rotterdam.
In collaboration with Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, “Free At Last” toured as a repertoire of the company in more than 30 theatres around The Netherlands, while in 2021, supported by the Athens & Epidaurus Festival, a new version of “Free At Last” was created called “Free At Last : Rerooted” and premiered in Athens, Greece. Their production “Valley of the Hummingbirds” was commissioned by Staatstheater Braunschweig and premiered in February 2022 in Germany, was performed 16 times receiving overwhelming reviews. Their project “Pilgrims”, was constructed around the idea of additional outreach of contemporary dance in greek provinces and received support from The Greek Ministry of Culture, Orsolina28 and The J.F. Costopoulos Foundation. It traveled around 9 small towns and villages in 2023, with performances in public spaces and workshops to people with no previous experience in dance.
Danae & Dionysios were also commissioned to choreograph at Skånes Dansteater the production “In wind or dust” which premiered in February 2024 and toured around the region of Skåne for 12 additional performances, while they have also received funding from the Greek Ministry of Culture to tour their production “Fάrιsa” to non-European countries such as Jamaica, Mexico, Tanzania and more, in order to invigorate the Greek culture’s outreach. Lastly, in autumn 2023 they received the first award at Masdanza28 for their choreography “Fάrιsa”, as well as a collaboration award with Dance Haus Più in Milan, Italy. They were also part of the extension tour and performed around 7 Canary Islands. Danae & Dionysios also give workshops internationally to postgraduate and undergraduate schools, institutions and programs such as Codarts, PERA School of Performing Arts, Fre3 Bodies, Descalzinha and others.
